Why a Yellow Duck?
Hi, it's Karen here, owner and founder of Bed and Breakfast Academy. I'm often asked why our community is called The Yellow Duck Collection, so here's the story!
I joined Twitter in 2009 and used one of the yellow ducks from my own B&B bathroom as my profile photo. This bright yellow duck stood out on the Twitter feed and helped me gain 14,000 followers! I don't use Twitter anymore but the yellow duck has jumped ship and is now my Instagram profile pic. The yellow duck has become a mascot for both my B&B and for Bed and Breakfast Academy.
During lockdown, a tough time for the hospitality industry, members of the past course attendees facebook group pulled together as a community. We held regular ZOOM calls and supported each other as we navigated our way through cancellations, claiming grants and how to reopen safely.
I've never had one directory of everyone who has been on the course, so we took the time we had spare during lockdown to pull this together. A group brainstorm birthed the name "The Yellow Duck Collection"
The Facebook Group is only 5 years old and I've been running the bed and breakfast training courses for 15 years, so there will be some course attendees who are missing from the list. If this is you and you want to join us, do get in touch!
The web presence for the Yellow Duck Collection is still work in progress. But my motto for the the B&B Marketing Membership is "PROGRESS NOT PERFECTION"
I'd like to give a huge shout out to all of the Yellow Ducks who have supported each other during a tough year and a bit. But I'd like to say a special huge thank you to Clare and Dave Wright of the School House B&B in Shropshire. Clare worked very hard to pull together the Google map and Facebook Page of the Yellow Duck Collection.
And to Catriona Haskell-Ward of Milburn Bed & Breakfast on Skye, who created this list of B&Bs.
And also to Steve and Sarah of Station House B&B in Thorpe, Ashbourne, who commissioned this amazing Glass Yellow Duck, that members of the community can buy and proudly display.
