It's that time of year, when many of us have set new intentions for a healthier diet in 2024.
I was actually quite pleased with myself over Christmas as I managed to keep up with my kefir, kombucha, kimchi and high fibre diet over the holiday period, albeit healthily supplemented with mincemeat shortbread and chocolates!
If you or your B&B guests are yearning something for breakfast that leaves you feeling a bit more virtuous, without feeling deprived in taste, here's a round up of some of my healthier breakfast recipes.
If guests are doing Veganuary then consider offering replacing cheese and eggs with chickpea mash, tofu scramble, hummus and nut butters for added protein.
When I had vegan guests staying ( or in fact any guests with specific dietary requirements ) I would always ask if there were specific foods they wanted me to get in and serve up for breakfast. It takes out a lot of the guesswork!
High Protein Breakfast Recipes
Especially as we age, protein is crucial for maintaining muscle mass, bone strength and helping us stay full.

High Fibre Breakfast Recipes
The British Heart Foundation recommendation is that adults should eat 30g of fibre a day, but they say average intake is currently 20g, so most of us have a long way to go.
Here are some of my high fibre recipes:
High Protein Breakfast Shake - a 2nd mention for this recipe as it has the advantage of being very high in both protein and fibre, as well as containing fermented kefir. It's my go to daily breakfast
Homemade Baked Beans - Note that the beans aren't vegetarian as they contain worcestershire sauce
Lighter Vegetarian Breakfast Recipes
If your guests have given up meat for January, then these breakfasts always proved very popular at my B&B! The herby mushrooms with poached eggs was most popular vegetarian breakfast!
